Q: Why does an 1991 Mazda Miata's engine gage run hot but the does not over heat?
It is weared that the engine reads hot but never overheats. I live in central florida and with the air off it reads hot. The antifreeze is good the belts and hoses are new. The oil is good. Could it be because of the car being so old that the gage is just malfunctioning? Any mechanics out there that can help?
A: All of the answers above can't be right *if* your motor truly isn't overheating.
What I think is happening (from personal experience since this happened to me) is that your alternator is overcharging your electrical system & battery.
Your temperature gauge is simply driven off voltage and resistance. The temperature sensor is simply a thermo-resistor. Changing temperatures in the coolant changes the resistance value in the sensor. The varying resistance allow a different voltage reading to reach the gauge (or the ECU circuit that controls the gauge) thus changing the display.
If the alternator voltage is 16 volts instead of 14 volts, the voltage into this circuit will read higher and this will show as a higher temperature on the gauge even if the temp isn't actually hotter.
Have your alternator checked for a bad voltage regulator.
Q: will i need a spring compressor when changing out the rear shocks in a 1991 mazda miata?
A: you dont need it but i recomend you to use it
is more easy and safe to install any new shock with the compressor
just consider this, if you are looking at the shock nut while you are unbolt it and the spring jumps out (some cases dont jump but others will jump really hard) the force of the spring going up while the tool is there can hit you on the face and you will suffer a serious hit just for not buy a 30$ bucks tool
buy the tool and you will have for the next shock replacement
Q: 1991 Mazda Miata Leaks Oil?
I own a 1991 Mazda Miata. It however leaks oil, I was wondering what some causes of this could be? Can it just be possibly an oil pan gasket, or could it something other than that?
A: Depends on where it's leaking from. Oil pan gasket, valve cover gaskets, rear seal are all possibilities.
Q: how much is my 1991 mazda miata worth considering it is in mint condition with 22,400 original miles?
beautiful car but need to part it out
A: Did you mean to to say that you were going to "part it out," or did you meant "part with it?" If it is mint why would you part it out? This isn't meant to be smart, but it is worth what someone is willing to pay for it. Point being, cast a wide net to make sure the maximum number of potential buyers are aware of your car. Advertise in big city papers around your region, Autotrader, the internets, etc.
Q: what is the best cold air intake system for a 1991 mazda miata. And can you change factory air meter assembly?
A: The above 2 fools don't know anything. Idiots ruining the system.
Changing the intake on the Miata DOES free up hp. Not much, but in the Miata, every bit is noticeable.
Due to the cramped intake area in the Miata, custom setups are a little more complex to put together. You can make your own as I have done on my '94 1.8L, the main part you will need is some sort of tight 90 degree mandrel bend/coupler to go from the throttle body to infront of the engine. From there, you need a straight section with a nipple for the vacuum line that runs right under the throttle body. Don't worry about the one on the valve cover, you can put a breather filter on there or even leave it open with the chrome tube, that's how I'm running and there's no issues of oil coming out or anything. Cut the straight section right after it makes it to the right side of the engine. Then you need a 45 degree(more or less) bend to go to the airflow meter. You'll also need a few couplers and clamps. You'll also want to make some sort of bracket to hold the AFM in place, holding it to the engine is best as there won't be stress on the intake when the engine torques on the mounts while driving.
You'll also need a cone filter adaptor flange, something you can get from AutoZone, Advanced, etc.
The tubing you use should be 3".
Now then, the airflow meter itself can be upgraded to a bigger one which has been dynoed to gain 5-8whp. Most people use the '86-'88 RX-7 B-code AFM. It plugs right in to your Miata though you will have to tune it for proper air-fuel ratio. It's not as hard as it sounds. If you can't find the RX-7 AFM cheap, get a K-code AFM from any '88-'92 626/MX-6/Probe 2.2L, and then find another S-code AFM(what's stock on your Miata) from any 323/MX-3(not the V6). Take the S-code AFM and remove the circut board...comes out with screws and an allen screw, pretty straight forward. You'll then replace the K-code's circut board with the S-code circut board. This makes the K-code AFM useable in your Miata. You can even do the swap at the junkyard so that you only buy 1 AFM and not 2.
Once back together, install it with your new intake and then you have to tune it, a matter of opening the top(which you have to do to swap the circut board) and turning that gear wheel. I don't feel like typing the whole proceedure here, so visit the Miata.net forums and search for it. I've written many posts explaining how to do it in great detail.
Hope that helps.
Q: 1991 mazda miata won't start?
changed the fuel pump, fuel filter and plugs will start with starting fluid but won't run after its gone
A: Ok, so you changed everything that is run by the electric battery...ever thought about checking the battery first??? If not go to auto zone and let them test your battery for free. As the condition your talking about is no power going to anything that actually cranks and fuels the car.

Q: 1991 Mazda Miata Owner's Manual in PDF?
Just picked up a used Miata and am looking for a pdf version of the owener's manual. Would appreciate any help.
A: If you can find a Manual for the 1990-1993 Model then you are set. Those models were the same and not much different other than interior options. Download the 1991 Manual Avgord Mentioned and you're good.
Like the others said, Miata.net is a godsend. It will save you thousands on repairs and offers a wealth of information. The Miata is one of the easiest cars I have ever owned to maintain or work on.

Q: mazda miata 1991 0r 1999?
i want to get a mazda miata and i dont know which year to get so please help me
A: I would go with the 91 Miata. It will get better gas mileage. You can actually work on and repair more things with the 91 than the 99. The 99 has a bigger engine, but eats more fuel and will have more power issues. If your not wanting flip up lights there are retro kits to make the 91 not have flip lights. The next big selling point is the 89-94s have been known to run for over 250,000 miles and all you have to do is keep the vehicle maintained...ie keep the oil, plugs, air filters changed, keep an eye on the tires and change out the timing belt at every 60K miles. The newer models also have lots of power this and power that, which is just extra maintenance costs...yes the earlier models are spartan, but spartan is easy to replace. I would not trade my own Miata for a newer one by any stretch. So save yourself a mint on insurance and get a 91.
Don't listen to Mazda Tech...Planet Miata and tons of other sites carry used and new OEM parts...in fact if you can find the parts in motion site for the dealer closest to you, you can see even Mazda still sells OEM parts for the older models. He is on goat island and does not have all the available resources those in the states have, because many wont ship overseas because of the rampant fraud.
Q: My 1991 Mazda Miata engine seems to run hotter during highway driving?
This is a follow up question to the original one I left. After about 30 minutes of hiway driving the gage goes to the hot side then seems to come down slightly when I drive on local streets. It doesn't seem to over heat. Should I use a higher octane gas or a gas additive? The head gaskets were recently changes and the timing belt was changes at 180K it now has 231K. All the belts, hoses, spark pugs and wires and gas filter is new. Any other suggestions? Can this just be a gage that needs to be replaced? Or can I just ignore it?
A: A car that heats up at highway speed,is usually a sign of a clogged radiator or a restriction in the coolant flow.
Q: About how many miles does the Mazda Miata last? Is it as reliable and long lasting as a toyota or honda?
I am looking to buy a 1991-1996 model! I am a college student looking for a safe, reliable, cheap and fun car! Thank You!
A: the miata is a great car it runs forever is super reliable handels great parts are reasonably priced and easy to find
that said there are a few things to be aware of
the earlier miatas had a crankshaft issue (90-92)
also the earlier cars are prone to rusting underneath on the kick panels due to owners never cleaning out the convertable top drain tubes
the earlier cars are lighter due to some unibody structural issues and can be a little rattly
all these issues were dealt with by 1993
In 94 it was given a 1.8 liter engine I would have to recommend a 93 model as the larger engine is not much more powerful but a little worse on gas and also the smaller engine seems to rev faster probably due to a lighter rotating assembly
so...get a 93 and tell all those dinks that say its a chic car to **** off! I have never gotten more girls phone numbers in it than any other car or truck Ive ever driven
Q: Is the Miata a girly car?
lo.l i know an old guy that drives a miata, its like this shade of blue.
http://www.dragtimes.com/images/11326-1991-Mazda-Miata-MX5.jpg
is it girlie looking?
A: YES for sure. Its way to girly and small for most men! My friend's five foot two and he can't even fit in the car firstly, your legs always hit the steering wheel! The style and shape is also to feminine (no offence), it's not the muscular, exotic sportscars that guys like to have.
Q: What do you think of the 1991 to 1994 Mercury Capri (Ford, Mercury, Mazda)?
Just wanted to see what others think. I think it is a good cheap convertible with great fuel economy. Although, it is made very cheap. Would you pick this over a Mazda Miata since it has a back seat and front wheel drive?
Matth.....It is a foreign car. It was made by Ford of Australia and used Mazda parts.
A: The 91 to 94 Mercury Capri is a roadster that was made by Ford in Australia as a Mazda mx-5 and Ford Capri and imported to the U S as a Mercury Capri and had quality control problems as it was rushed to market to compete with the Mazda Miata.
Q: How do I remove and clean my fuel injectors?
I drive a 1991 Mazda Miata with a 1.6l DOHC engine.
A: fuel injectors cannot be cleaned when taken off because you need power to open the injectors and when you remove the injectors, you'll have to replace all four rubber O-rings and they are very delicate to remove and install. Fuel injectors never has to get cleaned because in the gas tank is a strainer that will trap any debris before it goes into the fuel injectors
