Q: What additional changes do I need to make to have my 1986 Mazda RX7 pass the Texas Emissions Test?
I have completely replaced the exhaust system, including a new catelytic converter. Also the engine has had a major tuneup by a Mazda Service Dept.
A: If you read the emissions paper they tell which areas failed. They normally give you a booklet that will tell you what to change out. Normally the EGR system is not working. Then look at your 0-2 sensor. Keep receipts for all parts and repairs done. Normally they will give you a waver after $300.00 is spent. Check with the emissions people to be sure.

Q: How do i know when to rebuild my rx7? When do I need to replace the apex seals?
My name is Chris and i have a 1986 mazda rx-7 NA. It runs great and has no troubles. I just whant to know as much info as i can about the simptoms of a rotary that needs to be rebuilt. I also whould like any info about what a rebuild requires, how much it costs, and where i can buy an engine rebuild kit in order to do it myself. I would also like all the same info regarding the apex seals. Thanks!
A: if it starts easily and idles easily it's good. if it doesn't start, or is a complete pain in the butt to start, or needs the idle bumped up to 3000rpm, it's a good sign you need to rebuild.
these motors burn oil to lube the apex seals, especially when driven hard ,so judging on the oil being used isn't the best way to judge.
with the proper manual, they are easier than a piston motor to rebuild.
